Affected by the tight supply of wafers, the delivery period of SSD main control IC and PMIC parts will be extended to 32 weeks in 2021; all main control IC suppliers generally give priority to supplying NAND Flash original factory customers, so the production of module factories at that time could not meet the requirements SSD demand in the retail market. In the second half of 2021, the supply of SSD-related components will improve quarter by quarter, and various module factories will expand SSD shipments in order to sprint their annual perance. According to TrendForce research, global channel SSD shipments will reach 127 million units in 2021, an annual growth rate of 11%.

The 2021 global SSD ranking is calculated based on the shipments of module manufacturers' own brands in the channel market, and the original NAND Flash parts are not included. NAND Flash original factory supply accounts for about 42% of the overall channel market, and module factory shipments account for about 58%. Affected by the shortage of SSD-related parts and components, the original factory’s supply chain management has more advantages than the module factory. The market share in the overall channel market has increased compared with 2020.

The global semiconductor industry is ushering in a new round of inventory adjustment cycle. Last year, the shortage of SSD main control ICs will be fully improved in 2022. So what will happen in 2023? On November 10-11, 2022, the International IC Exhibition and Seminar (IIC ShenZhen 2022) will be held in Shenzhen. At the same time, the Global CEO Summit and the Global Distribution and Supply Chain Leaders Summit will be held. During the period, domestic and foreign electronics industry leaders, senior management, and industry experts will focus on the development trend of the global semiconductor market for research and analysis, and conduct in-depth discussions on the driving logic and key field applications of the global semiconductor industry. Welcome to register for the conference!

Observing the changes in the global SSD market in 2021, first, due to the shortage of wafers at the beginning of 2021, the supply of SSDs is in short supply, and large module factories resort to limited supply strategies to deal with it. As a result, product prices have also risen, and the overall profit has also increased. Module factories follow up, and some large module factories have obtained support from SSD master IC manufacturers due to their supply chain advantages, and their market share has increased; Under the supply of upstream wafer production capacity, the supply of SSD products of some manufacturers has been limited; thirdly, the epidemic has not stopped, and the demand for games is still strong, and the ranking of brand manufacturers focusing on gaming notebook products has also risen.

The ranking of SSD module factories this time is still the trend of the big ones, and the top three in terms of shipments are still Kingston, ADATA, and Kimtigo, and the top three are only occupied by Kingston. There has been a decline. Due to the huge production demand, it is difficult to meet the delivery date of its orders when the wafers are tight, so the shipments are affected. The biggest change is that the ranking of Transcend has risen sharply from the tenth place in 2020 to the sixth place, and newcomers Powev and GIGABYTE have entered the list.

Transcend leveraged its long-term brand advantage to obtain support from SSD master control IC manufacturers, and its shipments have also increased significantly as a result. In particular, SSD products are specially designed to meet Apple's laptop upgrade needs. With the increase in Apple's laptop market share, the demand for Transcend's related products will increase. In 2021, the market share of SSD shipments will rise to 5%. Jiahe Jinwei benefited from its long-term operation in the high-end game market and its diversified product solutions. As the demand for high-end perance and game-related products maintains strong growth momentum, it has squeezed into the top ten. Gigabyte also benefited from the company's efforts to expand the supply of game-related components and products, and its motherboard products drove SSD shipments.
The penetration rate of PCIe specifications continues to rise, and the global market layout is the driving force for the future growth of various brands

In 2021, the epidemic will continue to interfere with the supply of SSDs. In addition to the supply of SSD main control ICs, the diversified layout of production bases is also a key factor to increase the momentum of shipments. Looking into the future, the growth momentum of module factories mainly selling SSD interfaces will gradually shift from SATA to PCIe. However, as the transmission speed of the PCIe interface doubles, compatibility issues are also more complicated than SATA SSDs. How to provide complete services to help SSD product upgrades can enhance brand power and continue to increase shipments. TrendForce believes that in addition to the cost of future product sales, the ability to provide complete global production and sales services is an important factor for the continuous increase in PCIe SSD shipments.
Enterprises in mainland China continue to advance in storage product technology and are expected to continue to seize market share

TrendForce also observed that in the SSD supply chain, the proportion of mainland Chinese enterprises' products is increasing. Especially in terms of main control IC technology, many manufacturers have gradually stepped into the research and development of PCIe main control ICs, and some module factories have even cooperated with mainland enterprise servers to develop enterprise SSDs, especially when Intel (Intel) gradually withdraws from the supply of Optane SSDs Later, DapuStor, a mainland manufacturer, adopted Kioxia XL Flash to launch an alternative solution with similar perance, hoping to grab orders for this storage type memory market after Intel withdrew. The above-mentioned developments clearly show that mainland Chinese manufacturers are playing a stronger role in the SSD supply chain, and there is an opportunity to continue to seize market share through upstream and downstream integration in the future.
